Our next Colorado wedding vendor to be interviewed is Sabrina with Sabrina Deemer Makeup! I have had the privilege of working with Sabrina for over 7 years now! Way back when she decided that she wanted to be a makeup artist in the first place. She is one of the most driven individuals I know and has come SO far in the wedding industry. I have worked with Sabrina for countless sessions, styled weddings and we will be working together again for several 2020 weddings too! Sabrina & I make a great team and I would LOVE to work with her for future weddings. So here is the interview with Sabrina, be prepared to soak up all the wedding makeup knowledge and then share this with your friends!
1. Tell us a bit about yourself! How did you get into wedding makeup?
I’m a licensed esthetician and professional makeup artist based in Denver. I travel all over Colorado to do makeup for weddings, boudoir, photoshoots, professional dance teams, you name it! I graduated esthetician school in 2018 and officially became an LLC in 2019. Even though my business is only a year old, I spent a lot of time prior learning and working under some of the best artists in Colorado before deciding to take the leap of starting my own business. I’ve always had a passion for makeup and have always known that this is exactly what I wanted to do. I started as a Freshman in high school, practicing on my friends in the bathroom after school and now here I am – making women feel and look beautiful every day as my job. It really is a dream come true.
2. Why is having your makeup styled for your wedding important/helpful?
I think having your makeup and hair done definitely takes away some of the stress of your big day because it’s one less thing you have to worry about! It gives you a chance to relax, get pampered, hang out with all of your girls and just enjoy the final moments before your wedding.
It is also important to get your makeup done for your wedding day because as professionals, we know what products to use so your makeup lasts all day, looks good in photos, and we know what will best compliment your facial features.
3. Do you have any tips for brides when it comes to their makeup, anything they commonly overlook?
Your makeup needs to be slightly more dramatic on your wedding day because the makeup will not show up as much in photos as it does in real life! A lot of Colorado women do not wear a ton of makeup and sometimes do not realize this. It’s all about finding a balance of still looking like yourself but also being dark enough to show up in photos.
4. What is the best way for a bride to prepare her skin for her wedding day?
The biggest thing to do for your skin (and lips!) would be to make sure you are exfoliating and moisturizing very well leading up to your wedding day! With it being so incredibly dry in Colorado, it can be challenging to apply makeup over dry, sometimes flaky, skin.
I also get asked by brides all the time if I recommend getting any kind of treatment done before the wedding day. I always tell my clients that my FAVORITE treatment that I highly recommend is a dermaplane. It removes dead skin cells and hair from your face, leaving you skin smooth and glowing!
5. Would you recommend a makeup trial?
I always recommend a makeup trial. Not only does it give me a chance to meet my brides and get to know them before the wedding, but it also gives us time to discuss what look they are going for and make sure they look exactly how they want to look on their wedding day. Even if we have to alter the makeup look several times during the trial, I will spend as much time as I need to making sure it’s perfect for you.
6. Do you recommend lash strips or extensions?
Doesn’t matter! It just depends on the preference of the bride. For clients who don’t have lash extensions, I ALWAYS recommend false lashes when getting your makeup done (even if they are natural looking lashes). They help open up your eyes and they look so great I photos!
7. How can a bride keep her foundation set all night?
Don’t Kim Kardashian cry. 😉 Just kidding, kind of.
All of the foundations in my kit are long wearing, so the makeup usually stays put all day. After I do a bride’s makeup, I set it very well with a setting spray. I tell my brides, if they start to get oily, they can blot lightly with a tissue or touch up with some setting powder if needed. If you cry, blot your face with a tissue, do not rub!
8. When should a bride book her Makeup Artist?
I think the easiest answer to this question is if you find an artist that you know you for sure want for your wedding, book them as soon as possible. May-October are our busiest months and sometimes we can book weddings even a year in advance. I’m already getting inquiries and bookings for 2021!
Okay lesson #1 I learned from Sabrina’s interview- BLOT the tears away, do not rub. I repeat do. not. rub! I am passing this along to you all because let’s be real I know happy tears on your wedding day are definitely a reality for most brides!
